The Tax Modernization & Economic Stimulus Act (SB2054 by Sen. Reginald Tate & HB2182 by Rep. Larry Turner), will:

Give targeted tax breaks to those hardest hit by the current economic downturn
Repeal Tennessee's unjust and unfair tax on grocery food
Create a more equitable distribution of taxes across all income groups
Help local businesses and enable Tennessee to more effectively compete with its neighbors
Raise over $1 billion to meet the current budget shortfall and invest in public structures vital to a strong economy and healthy communities
Create a tax system that can function in our 21st Century economy, allowing Tennessee to move beyond the endless cycles of budget shortfalls

After an unruly mob of ill-informed tax protesters vandalized the TN Capitol and terrorized lawmakers, the media and political leaders got the impression that a state income tax was an unpopular subject. Polls show otherwise. In fact, tax modernization as proposed by TFT is the most popular of all revenue-enhancing measures that are under consideration. A state property tax garners 7-10% support. Higher sales taxes get 10-14% support, adding an income tax on top of the current system without any tax rollbacks gets 27-34% support, and a comprehensive modernization plan coupling sales tax rollbacks with a broad-based income tax gain 40-61% support. Please set aside your concerns about reelection and consider the merits of this proposal (SB2054 by Sen. Reginald Tate & HB2182 by Rep. Larry Turner). Once it's adopted, we'll all be wondering why we didn't do it twenty years ago.
