TFT Calls on Tax Commission to Do More
The good news is that the Tax Structure Study Commission
is looking at real tax reform that would lower taxes for most by creating
a level playing field for everyone. Proposals considered at the July meeting
look very much like TFT's long-standing platform, including repeal of
the food tax, reduction of the sales tax on non-food items, and enactment
of a progressive income tax to replace the current Hall Tax.
The bad news is the proposals they are looking at are all
"revenue neutral," as in they raise no new revenue. Today, TFT
issued the a press release applauding the Commissioners for the progress
made so far while calling on the Commission to do more, because "Under-funding
state services in a fair and equitable manner is not good enough."
Read the full TFT press release for more.
With the final report due in December 2004, the next few
meetings are when they are looking at the various proposals. Read the July 30 Tennessean article for a summary of the July meeting and the
proposals being considered.
