Tenn. poverty grows at 2.5 times national average
On August 26, the Economic
Policy Institute issued a report highlighting the growth in poverty around the country. While the national trends are disturbing enough, the
news for Tennessee is even worse.
That's because poverty rates in Tennessee grew at two-and-a-half
times the national average!
Nationally, poverty rates grew from 11.6% in 99-00 to 12.3%
in 02-03, and increase of 0.7 points. Tennessee’s poverty rates
grew much faster from 12.7% in 99-00 to 14.4 in 02-03, and increase of
1.8 points. Only 12 states grew faster than Tennesse.
