TFT Holds Press Conference to Kick-Off Special Session
On
November 1, Tennesseans for Fair Taxation (TFT) held a press conference in Nashville
to announced its support of the Governor,s new tax proposal.
TFT,s board met on Saturday, October 30th, and prepared a written
statement that was issued at the press conference. The statement
declared "The proposal the Governor is putting before us today is a giant
step in the right direction. It has the strong support of Tennesseans
for Fair Taxation and it deserves the support of the General Assembly.
About
20 people attended the press conference representing TFT and several of its
coalition partners, including MANNA (anti-hunger organization), the Tenn. Health
Care Campaign (THCC), Common Cause of Tennessee, and the National Alliance for
the Mentally Ill (NAMI) of Tennessee. Gene Pool with NAMI declared, "We,re
simply saying the time for tax reform is now. That,s what the group did.
Carter Moody with THCC observed, "This whole week is the
culmination of years of effort by TFT. Seeing the coalition members on
stage with TFT,s staff shows we,re not alone. Public support for tax reform
has grown dramatically.
At one point, a list of over 50 organizations supporting
tax reform was unfurled. A similar list of four opposing organizations
was held up for comparison. The overwhelming support of organized groups
that have studied the issue was seen at the recent field hearings across the
state where supporting testimony far outnumbered opposing testimony.
