Holding the Line - A Victory for Tax Reform
TFT soundly defeating at least two efforts to pass a sales tax
increase this year. In the waning days of the session, Sen. Haynes of Nashville
(Democratic Caucus Chair) tried to push through a 3/4 percent sales tax increase
bringing Tennessee up to 9.5%! Members fought and successfully defeated the
proposed hike only to face it again a few weeks later. TFT was on the alert
though, and in the end both efforts failed thanks to TFT.
According to Shirley Keller, TFT member, "An increase in the state
sales tax would impose an even heavier tax burden on moderate and low-income
families; making the tax structure even worse that it already is."
