Make Food Tax Postcards

One of the things you can do to help move the campaign forward is to help make postcards to send to your state legislators, then get your co-workers, friends, and neighbors to sign cards and send them on.

Made from scrap food product packaging, one side features a food product, cereal, or other item, while the back, usually brownish or white, has the message to the legislators, address label, and stamp.

Below is a quick summary of how you can make cards.
Make a party of it... It can be fun!

  1. Start collecting food packaging for making cards. Get some friends to help or see what is available at your local recycling center. Cereal boxes work well as do TV dinners. Don't use products that are obviously not going to be exempt or send the wrong message like sodas, beer, or candy-like foods.
  2. Call the TFT office nearest you to get Fair Taxes NOT Food Taxes stickers, message labels, and labels for your state legislators.
  3. Bring a bunch of friends over to your house, order in pizza or do a potluck, pop in a movie, and start cutting out the cards. Be sure to keep the cards within the US postal service specs for postcards if you want to send them at the 26 cent rate. Larger cards can be mailed, but they must be mailed at the 41 cent rate.
  4. Slap a "Fair Taxes NOT Food Taxes" sticker on the food product side. In addition to driving home the message, this helps to prevent it from looking like a Kellogg or General Mills promotional mailer.
  5. On the back of the card, attach the message label on the left with the label for the legislator on the right as shown below. These labels are available here for download:
    Tax Modernization
    Internet Parity/Amazon
    Combined Reporting
  6. Start circulating them in your community and send them on to your legislators in the General Assembly!
  7. Note: If your legislator is already signed on as a co-sponsor of the Food & Business Tax Fairness Act, then the message is more of a "Thank you for supporting..." than the postcard message below.
